4-H Dog Show

Show Date: Saturday September 20th  @ 9:00am in the ~ Show Ring

1. Open to 4-H members from New Hampshire and Maine, enrolled and active in the 4-H Dog Husbandry Project.           Exhibitors must follow the General 4-H Animal Show Rules.

2. All Exhibitors must show in one Fitting and Showmanship Class and at least one Obedience class or the Family Dog Class.  Baiting will not be allowed in Obedience classes.

Classes:

1. Novice Fitting & Showmanship: Members age 8 to 13 in their first year of showing.

2. Junior Fitting & Showmanship: Members age 9 to 11 years old not entered in class one.

3. Intermediate Fitting & Showmanship: Members 12 to 13

4. Senior Fitting & Showmanship: Members ages 14 to 18

Judging criteria for all Fitting & Showmanship classes include evaluating exhibitors on proper breed presentation, including grooming and appearance, skills in the individual dog’s presentation, knowledge of ring procedures, and general dogknowledge.

5. Sub Novice A:  For boys and girls who have not previously graduated a dog from any higher level of training.  The dogs in this class must not have had training beyond beginner level.  All work is done on a six foot lead and exercises are as follows: Heel on lead, figure 8, stand for examination, recall and finish, long sit (1 minute) and long down (3 minutes.)

6. Sub Novice B:  For Boys and girls who have graduated a dog in beginner or more advanced levels.  Otherwise the same as Sub Novice A.

7. Novice A:  For boys and girls who have not previously graduated a dog from novice level or more advanced levels of training.  The dogs in this class may have completed the Novice level of training but must not have had training beyond this level.  Dogs must not have completed the CD Degree.  All of the exercises except heel on lead and figure 8 will be done off lead.  Remaining off leash exercises will be done as follows: Stand for Examination, heel free, recall and finish, long sit (1 minute) and long down (3 minutes).

8. Novice B:  For boys and girls who have previously graduated a dog at the Novice or higher levels of training.  Otherwise, the same as Novice A.

9. Graduate Novice A:  For dogs that have not been qualified beyond the Graduate course of instruction.  Dogs may have achieved a CD, but not a CDX.  The AKC Graduate Novice score sheet will be used.

10. Graduate Novice B: Members who have received three blue ribbons in Graduate Novice A.  For Dogs and handlers who have achieved a CD, but not yet working a full open routine.  Not open to dogs who have achieved a CDX.

11. Open A: For dogs that have not been qualified beyond the Open class level.  Dogs may have earned a CD degree but not a CDX.  Obedience work will be all off lead and will also include retrieving on the flat, retrieve over high jump and broad jump.  (Please bring your own jumps.)

12. Open B:  For CD dogs with handlers who have finished a dog at the open level.

13. Brace:  Two dogs are judged as a team in a novice obedience routine.  At least one of the dogs must have completed a novice obedience class.

14. Family Dog: The 4-H member brings the family dog to this class.  The dog will be on display and the member will demonstrate the dog can sit, stay, come and walk calmly on a leash.  The member will be able to discuss the dog’s home care, including feeding, health, and general dog knowledge.  Dog must stay for the duration of the show.  Dog and handler will not show in any other class( with the exception of the Trick Class) at the show.

15. Dog Knowledge Quiz:  All Exhibitors are required to take the Dog Knowledge Quiz.  Questions for the quiz will be taken from the 4-H Curriculum Wiggles and Wags Manuals, the AKC Complete Dog Book and the AKC Complete Dog Book for kids.

16. Trick Class:  Show off your dog’s most amazing trick!

17. Comprehensive Educational Display that conveys a message informs and educates.  Must be a 3-D exhibit that goes    beyond an educational poster: can include posters, samples, equipment, themes and sub themes of your exhibit topic.  One premium will be awarded per exhibit.  Limit of two exhibits per club.  Set up display in barn after checking with           Superintendent.  Display must remain for entire duration of the 4-H Dog Show.  Exhibitor must be prepared to explain the exhibit to the Superintendent and public at large.

18. Youths are encouraged to make an informative poster promoting the 4-H Dog Project.  Posters will be displayed      throughout the day in a barn location to be determined by the show superintendent.  Be prepared to explain your poster to your show superintendent.

4-H Working Steer

Show Date: Sunday September 14, 2008, Pulling Ring, @ 9:30am

1. Open to all 4-H Working Steer Members from New Hampshire and Maine, who are age 8 to 18.  4-Her’s must follow the General 4-H Animal Rules found elsewhere in this book.

2. Exhibitors and their animals must arrive by 8:00am and remain until 5:00pm.

3. Teamsters must weigh their teams in at the scales between 7:30am and 9:30am.

4. If it is necessary for you to arrive Sat. Night before the show, please group together and leave room for those arriving Sunday Morning.

5. The Superintendent reserves the right to rearrange the order of classes 4-11 as needed.

6. Youth are encouraged to create and exhibit a comprehensive Educational Working Display in the 4-H Exhibit Building that conveys a message, informs and educates.  Must be a 3-D exhibit that goes beyond an educational poster; can include posters, samples, equipment, themes and sub themes of your exhibit topic.  One premium will be awarded per exhibit.         Premiums will be awarded per the 4-H Exhibit Handbook guidelines.

7. Youth are encouraged to make an informative poster promoting their 4-H Working Steer Project.  Posters will be displayed in the Poultry Barn during the duration of the fair.  Contact paper is suggested to help protect the poster.  One poster per         exhibitor. Premiums will be awarded.

Fitting and Showmanship– Condition and appearance of team, equipment, and teamster considered, as well as 4-Her’s knowledge of project.

Obstacle Course: Two Wheeled Cart-  Each teamsters must hitch their team to a two-wheeled cart and navigate an obstacle course demonstrating the ability of the teams to work together and the teamsters’ ability to drive their teams.  The specific course and time allotment to complete the course are at the discretion of the judge.

Stone Boat Performance– Teams must pull a dead weight equal to approximately 70% fir Sr.’s & Int./ 50% Jr’s the weight of the team and navigate an obstacle course demonstrating the ability of the teams to work together and the teamsters’ ability to drive their teams.  The specific course and time allotment to complete the course are at the discretion of the judge.

All other, blue ribbons– 10 points. All red ribbons– 8 points. 

All white ribbons– 6 points.

4-H Poultry

                                                                                   

Show Date: Sunday September 14, 2008 ~ Poultry Barn, 9:00am

 

1. Open to all enrolled 4-H members in New Hampshire and Maine.   Limit of 40 birds per exhibitor.

2. All birds must be in place by 3:00 PM Friday, September 14th.

3. The poultry show is open to any breed in the American Standard of Perfection.

4. All poultry over 5 months of age must have been tested within one year for and found negative to Pullorum and Avian Influenza and identified by official leg band.  All poultry under 5 months must be progeny of Pullorum and Avian         Influenza - clean stock and free of all infectious and contagious disease and exposure thereto.  A photo copy of a blood test is required with entry for all poultry to be entered.  All birds are subject to health inspection.  The Superintendent reserves the right to refuse any birds.  If any signs of contagious or infectious disease are present OR suspected, all birds owned by the exhibitor will be denied the privilege of showing and MUST BE REMOVED.

5. All waterfowl are exempted from the Pullorum-typhoid  rating.

6. The Superintendent has the right to limit the size of entries in case of overcrowding.

7. Exhibitors will be limited on the number of birds shown in any popular breed.  As determined by the number of cages available, the Superintendent will determine the number of birds each exhibitor may show in said popular breeds by mathematically using the number of sages available and the number of exhibitors showing that breed.  Only birds entered in the show will be penned.

9. All poultry exhibits may be removed by owners after 4:00 PM on Sunday, September 21st.

 

CLASSES:

1. Youth are encouraged to create and exhibit a comprehensive Educational Poultry Display in the 4-H Exhibit Building that conveys a message, informs and educates.  Must be a 3-D exhibit that goes beyond an educational poster; can include posters, samples, equipment, themes and sub themes of your exhibit topic.  One premium will be awarded per exhibit.         Premiums will be awarded per the 4-H Exhibit Handbook guidelines.

2. Youth are encouraged to make an informative poster promoting their 4-H Poultry Project.  Posters will be displayed in the Poultry Barn during the duration of the fair.  Contact paper is suggested to help protect the poster.  One poster per         exhibitor. Premiums will be awarded.

3. Costume Class-A costume class will be offered; entrants can dress up to if they’d like.  Entrants are also required to submit a narration to be read while they and their bird are presented to the judges.  3:00pm Poultry Barn

4. Herdsmanship- All youth that participate in the care and cleaning of the birds in the poultry barn will be eligible for the Herdsmanship Award.  Those youth are expected to assist in the feeding, watering and care of all of the birds in the Poultry Barn during the fair.   There will be a sign-up sheet in the barn so that exhibitors can sign up for times they can be there to help.   The Superintendent will judge each participant on their dedication to the upkeep of the Poultry Barn as well as their politeness and informative attitude toward the public.

5. Fitting and Showmanship- All 4-H Youth are strongly encouraged to participate in a Fitting and Showmanship class.     Pre-Novice, Novice, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Divisions will be available.  This class will take place on Sunday, September 15th at 1:00 PM. at the Poultry Barn.  White shirts and solid colored pants required, no jeans.  Premiums will be awarded for this class.  Trophies will be awarded to the top showman in each division.

6. Poultry Meat Pen: Is two birds-broilers, which look and weigh similar to each other. They should be as close to carbon copies of its pen mate as the exhibitor can achieve.  They are judged on confirmation (30pts), uniformity (20pts), fleshing (20pts), finish (10pts) and absence of defects (20 pts), for a total of 100 points possible.  In addition, written records of the care and feed of your broiler project are required and will be reviewed by the poultry judge and or 4-H Poultry Supt.  Check in day and time for your broiler project is Friday, September 12th at 4:00pm.  At this time the exhibitor will bring their meat pen to the official scale for weigh in, and then place their birds in the assigned cages.  Meat pens must be owned by the exhibitor for not less than 30 days prior to the show.  All birds must weigh between 3-5 pounds each at time of weigh-in.  Recommended age is 6-8 weeks to achieve this required weight.  All birds under or over the required weight will be disqualified.  Exhibitors may enter up to two meat pens each.  Entries may be limited by the Poultry Supt. as space dictates. Additional information on poultry meat pens may be obtained from the Strafford County CE 4-H office at       603-749-4445.

4-H Swine Show

Show Date: Saturday September 20 2008~

Swine Show Ring, 11:00am

1. Open to all enrolled 4-H Swine project members from New Hampshire and Maine who are age 8 to 18.  4-Her’s must follow the General 4-H Animal Rules found elsewhere in this book.

2. All swine projects exhibited must have proper identification either in the form of tattoo or ear notching and so noted on approval sheet.  Show canes, no paddles, and or stick not more than 1” in diameter and approximately for feet long will be used.  The showman’s body must not come in contact with animal while showing hog.

3. No exhibitor will strike another animal while in the show ring.

4. All animals must be shown as individuals in the ring  except sow and litter.  Superintendent reserves the right to excuse unruly pigs from the ring.  (Animals still eligible for prize)

4-H  BEEF SHOW

Following Completion  of 4-H  Dog Show

RULES & HEALTH REGULATIONS

1. Open to 4-H members from New Hampshire and Maine who are 8 to 18 years of age.

2. All dairy and beef cattle must be vaccinated for rabies/veterinarian will inspect animals before unloading.

3. Exhibitors should be familiar with the general rules of Strafford County 4-H program

4. Entry forms must be received on or before August 22, 2008 or they will be returned.

5. All cattle must be registered. No pending registrations accepted except junior calves.

6. Registration papers and necessary health charts will be checked. No photo copies accepted.

7. All tattoos must be legible and ears must be clean or entry will be disqualified

8. No animal may be shown out of its age class. (Dairy Show) Senior yearlings in milk must be shown as Junior 2 yr. olds.

9. Milking senior yearlings are ineligible for Junior Champion.

10. All livestock on the grounds shall be quartered in stalls or pens at the discretion of the Superintendent.

11. All animals must be on the Fair Grounds by 8:00 AM Saturday 21, 2008 unless participating in Herdsmanship.  See Herdsmanship Award guidelines.

12. Animals registered in the name of one or more members of the same family, and entered from the same farm, may be shown in the Breeders Herd. Not more than ONE entry per exhibitor or farm.

13. Exhibitors may combine entries for Get-of-Sire or Produce-of-Dam classes. However, each exhibitor will be     LIMITED to (1) Get per Sire & (1)Produce of Dam (Dairy Classes)

14. All animals must be clipped.

15. Not more than two entries per exhibitor per class.

16. Any animal shown in a group class must be first entered and shown in its respective single class.

17. Each exhibitor must bring to the ring registration papers on all animals to be shown in the Get-of-Sire and        Produce-of-Dam classes for identification purposes.

18. All decisions of the judge (s) will be final.

19. Senior bulls must have nose ring and must be shown with a strap attached to nose ring.

Beef Herdsman Award - Judged on the neatest, cleanest & most attractive exhibit, presentation of animals in the ring,cooperation of exhibitor and any other item that will contribute to the quality and educational value of the exhibit.  To be eligible you must arrive Friday Sept. 20th by 8:00 pm & remain on the grounds with your animals until judging is completed Saturday evening Sept. 21st.

4-H Dairy Show

1. There will be a tie rail north of the show ring that all cows are to tie up to. Do not use the show ring for this purpose.

2. This show is open to enrolled 4-H Dairy members from New Hampshire and  Maine who are age 8 to 18. 

3. All Exhibitors must follow the 4-H General Animal Show Rules located elsewhere in this book.

4. Each Exhibitor is limited to one entry in each class for each breed.

5. In Fitting and Showmanship classes a calf or yearling must be used unless a cow is the only animal the exhibitor has at the show.

6. All animals must arrive by 7:00am on Sunday September 21 2008.
