General Rules

1. Exhibits will be accepted Sunday September 7, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  One day only.  No Late Entries will be accepted!

2. Judging will be Thursday, September 11, 2008.  Judging Area will be closed to all persons except Judges and Staff.

3. Exhibits are to be removed between 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday September 22, 2008.  Premiums will be paid at that time.

4. All exhibits are judged on creativity, color, quality, clarity, and cleanliness.

5. Labels on all jars must be uniform in size, well centered and neatly printed.  Note: Only the product name should be on the label.  Note: Labels should be on the front of the jar. 

6. All jars must be screw top lids with rings.  Note: Rust on rings or lid is automatic disqualification.  No. 4oz. Jars.  No Fabric covers or ribbons on jar.  All canned goods must be current year’s canning.

7. Two classifications of Entrants:

A.  Junior- (up to age 18)

B.  Senior- (over 18)

8. Two categories of products judged: Cultivated and Wild.  Judging of the Dried Herb Display and the Herbed Oil & Vinegars will be judged on Presentation as well as the above-mentioned criteria.

10. Entries will be limited to six jars per section except herbed oils & vinegars and jams & jellies.  These two sections will allow up to twelve entries.  Collections are limited to one jam & jelly (following the criteria listed below; one herbed oil and/ or vinegars; and two from any other section.  This is a total of four collections allowed.  If the criteria for collections are not followed, it will be disqualified from judging.  These jars will not be judged individually either.

Section 1. Vegetables
Section 2. Fruits & Berries
Section 3. Pickles
Section 4. Relishes & Piccalilli
Section 5. Emulsions (Catsup, Mustard, etc.)
Section 6. Jellies, Jams, Conserves, Butters, Marmalades
Section 7. Sauces (spaghetti, salsa, etc.)
Section 8. Syrups (Maple, Fruit,  Honey)
Section 9.
Dried Herb Display - Mounted and labeled on cork board or similar. Minimum of 8 herbs.
Section 10. Herbed Vinegars and Oils.
Section 11. Special Collections (Five to 8 jars of variation in presentation of any one product.)
Section 12. Other Preserved Foods
Section 13. Christmas Basket- To include 6 jars of any combination.  In this section only, jars may include fabric covers.  No fresh foods in the basket.  Decorations may be added to the basket.  Premiums will be the same as for a collection.  Baskets will be judged on preservation and presentation.  Please call for more details.

GUIDELINES FOR JUDGING MAPLE SYRUP AND HONEY

1. All entries must be a minimum of 16 ounces.
2. All entries must be submitted in a clean, clear glass jar.
3. Entries will be judged on color and clarity* for-

Grade A-Light Amber
Grade A-Medium Amber
Grade A-Dark Amber
Grade B

4. Judging scale will be—Excellent, Satisfactory, Fair

*Entries will also be judged on flavor. A smaller jar of syrup from the same batch of syrup will be required for tasting. These jars will be marked with the entrants name and/or number and refrigerated for the duration of the fair.
