Who can enter? Amateurs only.

Photo Intake – two days only! Bring your photo entries to the exhibition building Sunday,  September 7th, from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm and Monday, September 8th, at 9:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Photo requirements: Photos may be black and white, sepia toned or colored. Photos may be created from either film or digital cameras. Except for panoramic photos, all other photos must be 8x10 or 8x12. Panoramas must be between 8x16 and 8x36.

Mats and backing requirements: Outside dimensions of mats for all 8x10 and 8x12 photos must be 11x14; mats for panoramas must be 11 inches by whatever amount is 3” longer than the photo. Mats may be single or double, any color, have interior openings that are oval, rectangular or other specialty shape, and may have a specialty finish (including but not limited to

corrugated appearance, fake leather appearance, metallic paint or linen covered.) Neatly cut poster board is NOT a mat.

Over the course of the two weeks that the photos will be hanging on the walls, any photos that do not have a backing

(poster board, matting, scrap cardboard such as from the side of a cereal box, etc.) tend to sag.  Therefore we require that some sort of backing material be behind your photo. Foam core is allowed as a backing material.

Photo titles: We strongly discourage photo titles written on the photos’ mats – at the very least (almost without exception) they are distracting to the photo. Ugly or distracting wording on your mat does have a negative impact on the overall presentation on your photo, and can make a difference in how the judges perceive (and judge) your photo.  With that said, beginning in 2008 if an exhibitor strongly feels that their photos “must” be presented with a photo title, it will be allowed, as long as it doesn’t      identify the exhibitor.

Not allowed: any photo or scrapbook page previously exhibited at Rochester Fair (including the non-judged People’s Choice photo competition), any photo currently or formerly entered in another department at the fair (4-H, scouts or Grange),

suggestive or inappropriate material, embellished mats (glitter, cordage, etc.), glass coverings, frames, or shrink wrap.

Photo “entry” defined and number allowed: Within the photo department, there is a maximum of four judged entries per exhibitor; (People’s Choice photos are not judged and therefore do not count towards this limit.) In all photo classes except the “Group” class, one entry consists of a mat (single or double), a photo, and a piece of backing; photos entered in the “Group” class are considered a double entry, which consists of four identical mats (single or double) and four related photos, each      properly backed.   A scrapbook page is considered one entry.  Each exhibitor may enter a maximum of two photos in any one class – except for the “Group” class, where only one double entry (four photos) is allowed.  In all classes except the “Group” class, exhibitors cannot present multiple views of a single pose/event/location; if a group class entry has strongly similar      pictures, (for example: squirrels at your bird feeder), you cannot present an additional photo of the same subject matter in    another class (i.e. an additional photo of a squirrel in the animal class). With the  exception of photos entered under antique photo restoration, the exhibitor of a photo must have taken the exhibited photo; the exhibitor of a restored antique photo must have done the restorations to the photo.

Misc. other rules: The superintendent reserves the right to limit or exclude any photos; her decisions are final. Rule breakage can result in the loss of ribbons, premiums, and/or having photos or scrapbook pages displayed.  Permission is given to the Rochester Fair Association to use the entries for advertising. Reasonable care is taken with all entries, but the Rochester Fair Association does not hold itself responsible for the safety of exhibits or for any damage or loss thereto.

Judging Divisions:  Junior Exhibitors (age 1-18) age will be taken into consideration when judging .  Adult exhibitors are age 19-59, and Seniors are age 60 and over.

Premiums: All photos are judged and awarded blue (1st premium, $6), red (2nd, $5), white (3rd, $4), or green (4th, no premium) flat ribbons as merited; a select few entries may receive a “special” purple flat ribbon (better than a blue, $12). Premiums in the “Group” class are doubled. Best of Class purple rosettes are awarded for Best Youth, Best Adult and Best Senior in each class; no additional premium is awarded for best in class rosettes.

Photo sales: exhibitors may offer their photo entries for sale, with prices set by the exhibitor and the Photo Department

retaining 25% of any sales made. Photos are sold with their mat, but ribbons or premiums earned are retained by the exhibitor. All photos must remain on display for the duration of the fair. The occasional sale of a photo, such as provided here, does not change the exhibitor to a professional status in the eyes of the Rochester Fair.

Photo pick up: Monday, September 22, 2008 from 12:00 pm to 5pm. Photos not picked up by 5pm are left at the fair office and

after Nov. 1 any remaining photos are discarded.

People’s Choice: “Larger Than Life” - Exhibitors may submit one entry that captures or presents this theme. Entries in this class are not judged and therefore do not count towards the maximum of four entries allowed per person. The superintendent reserves the right to  select which entries are included for display and voting.  Fairgoers vote for their favorite that best depicts this theme. Voting ends Friday at noon (the second Friday of the fair), and the winner announced later at a time beneficial to  the winner.

Scrapbooking: only one page may be exhibited per person, and this page is considered one entry in the photo department. Pages may be 8.5 X 11 or 12 X 12 and must be enclosed in a standard, clear plastic sleeve.  All pages are judged and awarded blue (1st premium, $6), red (2nd, $5), white (3rd, $4), or green (4th, no premium) flat ribbons as merited;  a select few entries may receive a “special” purple flat ribbon (better than a blue, $12). New in 2008: Scrapbook Challenge, where the entry must include a certain secret item that was only available to the   public at the 2007 Rochester Fair: rosette ribbon and $30 prize.
