Entries will be accepted Wednesday, Sept. 10 from 12 noon to 8:00 pm or entry forms may be mailed by Sept. 1st to SCCD, 259 County Farm Rd. Unit 3, Dover, NH 03820.  Entries must be in place by noon on Friday  Sept. 12th.  Removal date: Monday September 22, from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm.  The entry must be produced in 2008.  Youth may enter if they participated in the management and harvest program (list age on entry if 17 or younger). A six inch by four inch sign or paper that may be laminated can be provided with the entry that gives owner or farms name, location and contact information if the entry owner wishes public contact.  (Please also note if crop is     certified organic).  Hay and Silage will be judged by Tina Savage, Agricultural Extension Educator. Grain will be judged by the Department of Agricultural Food and Market Staff.

SECTION 3 - SILAGE
Entries must be in a one-gallon, clear plastic wide mouth, airtight container. Entries must be taken from the silo not more than 24 hours before being brought to the Fair grounds or should be frozen right after sample is taken from silo. The sample should be kept frozen and brought to the competition in its frozen state. Hay silage should be fermented. Corn silage must be fermented (not green).

SECTION 4 - TRESH GRAIN
Thresh grain will be in a quart size clear jar with sealing lid, filled to within an inch of the lid.  They will be judged on uniformity of kernel, soundness, percentage of foreign matter and damaged grain

SECTION 5 - SHEAF GRAIN
Sheaf will be more than 2 inches, bound in two or three places  and ready for display.  Do not strip leaves and roots should be removed.  Sheaves will be judged on uniformity (variety, length of head, color, and condition), quality (well cured, leave retained), and Arrangement (sheaf shall be made up neatly bound compact and attractive bundle)  Please name all varieties.

Youth Conservation Project

The Strafford County Conservation District is looking to recognize a youth or youth club/group at the 2008 Rochester Fair that have submitted a project that demonstrates an effort in conservation.  This is open to all youth; 4-H, Girl and Boy Scouts, and individual youth exhibitors  6-18 years of age and / or still in high school. Subject areas can include, but are not limited to:  water quality or quantity, soil erosion and sediment control, non-point source pollution, point source pollution, watershed   management, invasive species control, wildlife habitat protection, shore-land protection and best management practices for agricultural use of natural resources.  There will be a plaque awarded for Best of Show, along with a family pass for two nights at Mi-Te-Jo Camp Ground in Milton NH, (donated by Mi-Te-Jo Camp Ground). Agway Dover Farm Supplies are donating gift certificates for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placing, as was well as for all qualified entries. 

 

Guidelines:

1. This can be a one time or year round project that the youth/club researched and then developed a display for other youths or adults to inform them about a conservation topic of their choosing.  It is suggested that a journal or records of the youths or clubs efforts be submitted, documenting the changes they made or observed in their project.

2. Documentation of involvement in volunteer projects to clean-up, improve or restore a natural  environment.

3. Documentation of involvement in community efforts by conservation committee or local watershed associations to educate, conserve and restore natural resources.

4. Documentation of your involvement in increasing recycling in the home, community or school.  

5. Projects that youth has undertaken on the raising of crops or animals that have taken in to consideration water conservation, erosion and sediment control, nutrient management etc., will qualify for consideration for this award.
